ECI Revises Delhi SIR Schedule, Extends Claims and Objections Deadline by 26 Days

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday revised the timeline for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Delhi, extending the deadline for filing claims and objections to November 25 and rescheduling publication of the final voter list to December 22.

According to an ECI notification, claims and objections received during the exercise will be disposed of by December 15.

The revised schedule comes a day after the Supreme Court asked the poll panel to consider extending the deadline for filing claims and objections. Under the earlier schedule, the last date for submissions was October 30, while their disposal was to be completed by November 30. The final electoral roll was scheduled for publication on December 4.

Along with Delhi, the Election Commission has also revised SIR timelines for Maharashtra, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Nagaland.

The revision assumes significance as 47.56 lakh electors were excluded from Delhi’s draft electoral rolls, published on August 31, triggering the process for eligible voters to seek inclusion and for objections to be raised against entries.

According to the available data, the poll panel received 2,75,856 Form 6 applications between August 31 and October 28. Form 6 is used by eligible voters seeking inclusion in the electoral rolls.

The SIR exercise is aimed at revising electoral rolls, with provisions for adding eligible voters, deleting ineligible entries and correcting existing records.

Under the process, Form 7 is used to seek deletion of names from the electoral rolls, while Form 8 is meant for corrections or modifications to existing entries.

The extension provides voters additional time to submit applications and objections before the revised deadlines. The disposal of claims by December 15 will precede publication of the final electoral roll on December 22.

The Election Commission’s revised schedule is expected to guide the remaining stages of the revision exercise in Delhi, as the authorities process applications and objections before finalising the voter list.
