EC Orders New SPs in Four Tamil Nadu Districts Ahead of Polls
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday directed the Tamil Nadu government to appoint new Superintendents of Police (SPs) in four districts as part of efforts to ensure free and fair elections ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls scheduled for April 23 . The decision was taken after the Commission reviewed the state’s poll preparedness and security arrangements. According to the official order, D N Harikiran Prasad has been posted as SP of Karur , D V Kiran Shruthi as SP of Erode , Sujith Kumar as SP of Nagapattinam , and N Shreenatha as SP of Virudhunagar . The Commission directed the state authorities to implement the changes with immediate effect and submit a compliance report confirming the appointments by 11:00 am on Tuesday .
The move is part of the Commission’s standard practice of monitoring administrative postings during elections to ensure neutrality in governance and prevent any possible misuse of official machinery. The Election Commission derives its authority from Article 324 of the Constitution , which empowers it to supervise and conduct elections across the country. During election periods, the Commission often orders transfers or fresh postings of senior administrative and police officials, particularly in districts considered sensitive from a law and order perspective. Police officials play a crucial role in maintaining peaceful polling , preventing voter intimidation, monitoring vulnerable areas, and ensuring the safe movement of election personnel and materials.
The Commission also closely enforces the Model Code of Conduct , which comes into effect once elections are announced and sets guidelines for political parties and governments to ensure a level playing field during campaigns. Officials said such administrative changes are aimed at strengthening election oversight and boosting public confidence in the electoral process. Earlier on the same day, the Commission had also ordered the transfer of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) -level officers in Assam , another state preparing for elections. With the polling date approaching, the Commission is intensifying its oversight of security arrangements , administrative preparedness, and compliance with election rules to ensure a transparent and credible electoral process .
