The Ebola outbreak sweeping through eastern Congo has crossed a grim milestone, with confirmed infections surpassing 1,000 and the death toll climbing to 254 , underscoring the scale of a public health emergency that authorities fear is far from reaching its peak.

According to the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ministry of Health , the outbreak has now recorded 1,003 confirmed cases , while 100 patients have recovered since the disease was officially declared on May 15 . The outbreak is largely concentrated in Ituri province , which has emerged as the epicentre of the rapidly spreading virus.

Health officials have described the crisis as the most severe outbreak ever linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola , a variant for which there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments . The absence of targeted medical tools has heightened concerns among health experts, who warn that the actual number of infections could be significantly higher than official figures suggest.

Authorities acknowledge that major challenges continue to hamper containment efforts. One of the most pressing concerns is the limited success of contact tracing , a critical strategy used to identify and monitor individuals who may have been exposed to the virus. The Health Ministry said tracing efforts currently cover only about 55 per cent of identified contacts , leaving thousands potentially outside the surveillance network.
