East Coast Railway Logs 81.4 Million Tonnes Freight Loading in FY27 So Far

East Coast Railway (ECoR) recorded 81.40 million tonnes (MT) of originating freight loading during the first four months of financial year 2026-27, from April to July 2026, highlighting its strong performance in freight transportation.

The Khurda Road Division emerged as the largest contributor, handling 59.02 MT, accounting for around 72.5% of ECoR’s total freight loading during the period. The newly formed Rayagada Division contributed 13.71 MT, or approximately 16.8%, while Sambalpur Division accounted for 8.67 MT, representing about 10.6%.

The performance comes amid the recent reorganisation of the railway network and the formation of the Rayagada Railway Division, which has quickly emerged as a significant contributor to the zone’s freight operations.

Rayagada Division handled 3.14 MT of freight in July 2026 alone, including 2.28 MT of iron ore and 0.19 MT of bauxite. The figures underline the division’s growing role in transporting mineral resources from the region.

ECoR attributed the overall performance to the efficient utilisation of railway infrastructure, coordinated freight operations and timely movement of goods across its jurisdiction.

The achievement was supported by coordinated efforts of the Operating, Commercial, Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical and other departments of the railway zone.

The General Manager of East Coast Railway appreciated the efforts of officers and staff and called for sustained momentum in freight transportation, along with further improvements in operational efficiency and customer-oriented freight services.

The 81.40 MT loading in the first four months provides a strong start to FY27, with ECoR continuing to play a major role in the movement of industrial and mineral commodities.
