EAM Jaishankar meets UN chief guterres in New York, discusses global order and regional hotspots

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York, engaging in a wide-ranging discussion on the evolving global landscape, regional flashpoints, and the future of multilateral cooperation.

During the talks, Jaishankar said he valued the UN chief’s assessment of the current geopolitical order, which has been marked by rising conflicts, shifting power balances, and increasing strain on established global institutions. He noted that Guterres’ perspectives offered important insights as countries grapple with overlapping security, economic and humanitarian challenges.

“Good to meet with UNSG @antonioguterres in New York today. Valued his assessment of the current global order and its implications for multilateralism. Also appreciated his perspectives on various regional hotspots,” Jaishankar posted on social media after the meeting.

Officials said the discussion touched on several pressing regional crises, including tensions in the Middle East, ongoing conflicts in parts of Africa, and continuing instability in Eurasia. Both sides also reviewed the role of the United Nations in conflict resolution, peacekeeping, and responding to humanitarian emergencies.

Jaishankar thanked Guterres for his continued support for India’s growth, global engagement, and contributions to the UN system, including peacekeeping operations and development initiatives. India has consistently pushed for reforms in multilateral institutions, including UNSC expansion, to reflect contemporary global realities.

The External Affairs Minister was accompanied by India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador P. Harish, Deputy Permanent Representative Yojna Patel, and senior officials from the Permanent Mission of India. The meeting is part of Jaishankar’s ongoing diplomatic engagements in New York, aimed at strengthening India’s voice in global affairs.
