In a significant step toward making Andhra Pradesh drug-free , police have launched a dedicated anti-narcotics headquarters in Vijayawada. Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta inaugurated the EAGLE facility, which will act as the central command for operations against drug trafficking and organised crime.

The DGP said the unit has grown from a small wing set up to curb ganja smuggling into one of the country’s leading investigative agencies, with the near elimination of ganja cultivation in the state marking a major achievement. He credited consistent enforcement and strong government backing under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for the progress.

Police will implement a dual strategy focusing on dismantling supply chains and reducing consumption. Random drug testing will be carried out in identified hotspots using advanced technology, alongside strengthened surveillance systems to track offenders.

Officials also emphasised awareness initiatives such as “Chaitanya” and “Vajraprahar” to educate youth. In addition, Andhra Pradesh has set up Anti-Human Trafficking Units across the state under CID supervision, emerging as a model in tackling trafficking.

Authorities say the new facility will further intensify the fight against drug networks, reinforcing efforts to achieve a drug-free state.
