Writer E Jean Carroll, now 82, has received more than $5.6 million owed to her under a 2023 federal jury verdict that held President Donald Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, court filings confirmed this week, closing a three year wait that carried significant political weight in Washington. The disbursement of $5,625,005.48, comprising the original $5 million award plus accumulated interest, was released from an escrow account after the Supreme Court declined on June 29 to hear Trump's final appeal.

Carroll's attorney Roberta Kaplan confirmed the transfer, while Trump's lawyers separately sought an emergency order to block payment, an attempt a federal appeals court rejected. Carroll's team has indicated the funds will be placed in a retirement account pending resolution of Trump's request for the Supreme Court to reconsider its rejection, due by around July 25.

Notably, the payment arrives even as the Justice Department , under acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, opened a criminal investigation in May into whether Carroll committed perjury regarding funding for her lawsuits, reportedly tied to LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman's nonprofit. Blanche, who once represented Trump in the Carroll appeals, has recused himself, while the Chicago US Attorney's office has publicly denied opening any such probe, exposing conflicting accounts within the administration.

Separately, Trump continues appealing an $83.3 million defamation judgment awarded to Carroll in a second 2024 trial, currently pending before the Second Circuit, meaning the broader legal battle remains far from over despite this payout.
