DUSU Polls 2026: Polling Ends With 39.77% Turnout, Tight Security Across DU
Voting for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections concluded on Friday amid tight security across the university’s North and South campuses, with more than 2,000 police and paramilitary personnel deployed to maintain law and order.
Polling for the four central panel posts president, vice president, secretary and joint secretary was conducted in two shifts. Students of day colleges voted from 8:30 am to 1 pm, while students of evening colleges voted from 3 pm to 7:30 pm.
The election saw 1,51,842 eligible students and was conducted using more than 1,100 electronic voting machines. Delhi University had also set up 158 polling booths and 12 control rooms for the election.
According to the latest figures, voter turnout stood at 39.77 per cent by 7 pm, while 36 per cent turnout had been recorded in the first phase. Several college principals reported that the first phase of polling was largely smooth, with no major untoward incidents reported on their campuses. EVMs were subsequently transported to the counting centre under security arrangements.
Police maintained a presence at strategic locations through foot patrols, motorcycle teams and PCR vans, while paramilitary personnel were deployed at sensitive points. Vehicular movement was restricted on Chhatra Marg, Probyn Road and University Road during the polling and counting period.
The contest featured panels from the ABVP, NSUI and AISA-SFI alliance for the four central posts. Twenty candidates were contesting the central panel seats.
While polling itself was largely peaceful, the election was preceded by clashes and allegations of violations during campaigning. The Delhi High Court on Friday issued notices to 140 candidates over alleged violations of election norms and barred victory processions, drums and similar celebrations after the results. The court’s directions came after allegations involving violence, vandalism, vehicle cavalcades and other violations during campaigning.
