Duleep Trophy Final: Shami, Mukesh Put East Zone In Command Against South

Veteran pacer Mohammad Shami produced a disciplined spell in short bursts as East Zone strengthened their grip on the Duleep Trophy final, restricting South Zone to 242/6 at stumps on Day 3 on Tuesday.

South Zone still trail East by a massive 466 runs after East posted a formidable 708. With only four wickets remaining, South face an enormous challenge to avoid the follow-on and keep their hopes of staging a fightback alive.

Shami, 36, returned figures of 2/17 from 11 overs across three spells. His accuracy and ability to maintain a probing stump-to-stump line proved difficult for the South batters on a pitch that had offered limited assistance to the bowlers during the opening two days.

The pacer first broke a promising 56-run partnership between Shaik Rasheed (29) and Devdutt Padikkal by trapping Rasheed leg before wicket with a delivery that moved in just enough to beat his defensive stroke.

Shami returned later in the innings and removed Ravichandran Smaran after South captain Tilak Varma had begun building another partnership. He set up the left-hander with a sequence of deliveries before one moved away and produced an edge through to wicketkeeper Kumar Kushagra.

Earlier, Mukesh Kumar had made important breakthroughs for East. He dismissed vice-captain Ricky Bhui early and later ended Devdutt Padikkal's impressive innings of 62. Padikkal, fresh from a productive tour of Sri Lanka, had reached his half-century from 65 balls before attempting his trademark pick-up shot against a delivery from Mukesh and giving a catch in the deep.

Padikkal had earlier shared a 60-run stand with Narayan Jagadeesan (32), but Jagadeesan's attempt to drive a delivery from part-time spinner Shikhar Mohan resulted in a catch at cover.

South's innings followed a recurring pattern, with partnerships developing before East managed to break them. However, Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on 56, recording his third successive 50-plus score in the competition.

Tilak and Shreyas Gopal added 66 runs during the final session before Gopal was dismissed for 26 late in the day. CV Milind was unbeaten on 0 alongside Tilak at stumps.

South now face a daunting task on Day 4, with East firmly positioned to push for the Duleep Trophy title.
