In a remarkable turn of events, an assistant professor at Delhi University successfully recovered her stolen laptop containing six years of PhD research after tracing it using a mobile tracking application, following a car break-in near the university’s North Campus.

The incident occurred on a busy stretch of Bungalow Road in Delhi, where the professor had parked her vehicle while visiting the area with her husband. According to the professor, who shared her experience in a two-part video on Instagram, they had briefly stepped out for errands in nearby Kamala Nagar ahead of a college fest.

Upon returning, the couple was shocked to find the driver’s side window shattered . “The glass window was completely broken. We stood there, stunned,” she recounted. A bag containing her laptop, wallet, and an air purifier had been stolen. They immediately alerted the police . What followed, however, took an unexpected turn. Shortly after leaving the police station, the professor checked her phone and discovered that her laptop’s location could be tracked through a “Find My” application . The device appeared to be stationary at a nearby location for over 30 minutes.

Despite the obvious risks, the professor and her husband made the bold decision to visit the location themselves . Their unusual and potentially dangerous conditions proved crucial in the recovery. Speaking to local residents, they were informed that a group of young men with a known criminal background lived nearby. Acting on this information, the couple gained access to a neighbouring terrace. From there, the professor’s husband reportedly spotted individuals attempting to hide the stolen bag on an adjacent rooftop.

“The moment they noticed him, they moved away,” she said. Seizing the opportunity, the couple retrieved the bag, which still contained the laptop and other belongings. They also discovered additional suspected stolen items .

Police were subsequently informed and arrived at the scene, detaining the suspects . The incident highlights both the growing prevalence of urban theft and the increasing role of digital tracking tools in recovering stolen property. At the same time, it underscores the risks civilians may face when confronting suspected criminals directly, making the professor’s decision all the more surprising . While the outcome was fortunate, authorities generally advise against such direct intervention, urging victims to rely on law enforcement when tracking stolen devices.
