DRI Seizes Over 24 Kg of Narcotics in Kerala, Five Held in Anti-Drug Crackdown
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized more than 24 kilograms of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances across Kerala and arrested five individuals as part of a major anti-drug operation, the Finance Ministry said on Saturday.
The seizures were carried out by the DRI's Cochin Unit under Operation Chakravyuh at multiple locations, including Kochi, Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram. Officials recovered a range of contraband substances, including methaqualone, methamphetamine and hashish oil , which were allegedly intended for illicit distribution.
According to the ministry, the narcotics were detected through various smuggling methods, including concealment in passenger baggage at airports, courier consignments and outbound export cargo. The operation led to the arrest of five individuals, including key operatives allegedly linked to trafficking networks. All have been booked under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 .
The latest crackdown highlights the growing challenge posed by increasingly sophisticated drug trafficking networks that exploit multiple transport and logistics channels to move contraband across regions and international borders. Enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance at airports, cargo terminals and courier hubs in response to evolving smuggling tactics.
The DRI's Cochin Zonal Unit has reported significant enforcement activity over the past year. During the last financial year, it seized narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances valued at approximately ₹70.76 crore in Kerala and arrested 21 individuals in connection with various NDPS cases.
Authorities said efforts to dismantle trafficking syndicates and curb the illegal narcotics trade will continue through coordinated intelligence-led operations across the state.
