DRI seizes 512 kg Red Sanders hidden in veneer at Cochin port
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has thwarted an attempt to illegally export 512 kg of red sanders from the International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) at Cochin Port, Vallarpadam , officials said on Saturday.
Acting on specific intelligence , officers of the DRI’s Cochin Zonal Unit intercepted a container that was destined for China . The consignment had been declared as rubber core veneer , but upon inspection, officials discovered 16 logs of red sanders cleverly concealed between veneer layers.
The seized red sanders, along with the cover cargo, have been confiscated under the provisions of the Customs Act , and a detailed investigation is underway to identify those involved in the smuggling attempt and trace its network.
According to officials, red sanders ( Pterocarpus santalinus ) is a highly valued and protected species , listed under Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 . Its export is strictly prohibited under India’s Foreign Trade Policy , owing to concerns over illegal logging and international trafficking.
Significance of Red Sanders:
Red sanders is a rare and endemic hardwood species found primarily in parts of southern India, especially in the Eastern Ghats . It is prized in international markets particularly in East Asia for its rich color, durability, and use in high-end furniture, musical instruments, and traditional medicines . Due to its high demand and limited availability, it has become a target for organized smuggling syndicates , posing a serious threat to biodiversity and forest conservation.
The DRI noted that in the current financial year , its Cochin Zonal Unit has seized various contraband items including narcotic drugs, gold, wildlife products, and counterfeit cigarettes with a total estimated value of around ₹80 crore in Kerala .
Officials said the latest seizure highlights ongoing efforts to combat wildlife trafficking and illegal exports , and reiterated their commitment to safeguarding protected species and enforcing trade regulations.
