DRDO tests homegrown short-range missile, successfully clears trials

India’s frontline air defence received a major boost as the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) successfully conducted three consecutive flight trials of the indigenously developed VSHORADS (Very Short-Range Air Defence System) missile at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha.

The trials were aimed at revalidating the capability of VSHORADS to neutralise high-speed aerial threats flying at varying speeds, ranges, and altitudes. All three missiles intercepted and destroyed their designated targets, designed to mimic enemy aircraft under diverse threat scenarios, meeting extreme engagement parameters.

What makes VSHORADS unique is its man-portable design . Soldiers can carry it anywhere, even remote forward areas, hills, or battlefronts, and launch it within minutes, providing a rapid-response air defence shield where traditional long-range systems cannot operate quickly. This is especially valuable against low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and drones attempting to evade larger radar networks.

Unlike controlled demonstrations, the trials were conducted in final deployment configuration, with target acquisition and missile firing handled by field operators, making it a user validation exercise . Telemetry, electro-optical tracking systems, and radars confirmed the missile’s effectiveness against a wide range of aerial threats.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, armed forces, and industry partners, calling the trials a major success and indicating that the system could soon be inducted into the armed forces.

Strategically, VSHORADS forms a critical layer in India’s multi-tier air defence network. While long-range systems act as the outer shield, and medium-range systems cover intermediate zones, VSHORADS provides the last line of defence , stopping fast, low-altitude threats from reaching troops or key installations. Its combination of mobility, rapid deployment, and point-defence capability reinforces India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence technology and strengthens battlefield preparedness.
