Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been fined Rs 24 lakh after his side maintained a slow over-rate during their IPL clash against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. The penalty came as another setback for CSK after their crushing defeat ended the franchise’s hopes of reaching the playoffs.

Gujarat Titans delivered a dominant performance on Thursday night, defeating Chennai by a massive 89 runs in their final league stage encounter. The emphatic win helped the Titans secure a coveted top two finish in the IPL standings, giving them an important advantage heading into the playoffs.

For Chennai, however, the defeat marked a disappointing end to an inconsistent campaign. The five time champions entered the match with slim qualification hopes, but the heavy loss officially knocked them out of contention for the final four.

According to an IPL media advisory issued on Friday, the punishment was imposed because it was Chennai’s second over-rate offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct , which deals with minimum over-rate violations. CSK’s first offence had reportedly come earlier in Match 18 of the tournament.

Apart from Gaikwad’s fine, the rest of the Chennai playing XI, including the Impact Player , were also penalised. Each player has been fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their match fees , whichever amount is lower.

The penalty adds to the frustration surrounding CSK’s campaign, which saw flashes of promise but lacked consistency during crucial moments. While Gujarat Titans march confidently into the playoffs with momentum on their side, Chennai will now shift focus towards regrouping and rebuilding ahead of the next IPL season.
