Dominant India look to extend U-19 supremacy over Pakistan

A confident and well-rounded India will aim to stamp their authority once again on arch-rivals Pakistan when the two sides meet in the final of the Under-19 Asia Cup at the ICC Academy here on Sunday. Eyeing a record-extending 12th title, the Ayush Mhatre-led side enters the summit clash as firm favourites after an unbeaten run that has showcased both batting firepower and bowling depth.

India’s journey to the final has been marked by consistency and dominance. They topped Group A with wins in all their matches, including a commanding 90-run victory over Pakistan, and carried that momentum into the semifinals by cruising past Sri Lanka by eight wickets. Pakistan booked their place in the final after eliminating defending champions Bangladesh but have struggled to find the same level of balance as their rivals.

At the heart of India’s success has been an explosive batting unit that has repeatedly put opposition attacks under pressure. The team posted two 400-plus totals in the tournament, underlining their intent to bat big and bat fast. Teenage opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi set the tone early with a breathtaking 171 against UAE, while wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu made history by smashing an unbeaten double century against Malaysia, the first by an Indian in Youth ODIs.

The middle order has ensured that India have not been overly dependent on their top order. Aaron George has been the stabilising force, scoring three consecutive half-centuries and expertly managing the middle overs at a healthy strike rate. He has found reliable support in left-hander Vihaan Malhotra, who is coming off a composed unbeaten 61 in the semifinal. All-rounder Kanishk Chouhan has added further depth, contributing quick runs at the death and making key breakthroughs with the ball, including a match-winning spell against Pakistan in the group stage.

India’s bowling attack has been equally impressive. Pacer Deepesh Devendran has led from the front, emerging as the joint-highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 11 scalps. His ability to generate pace and movement with the new ball has unsettled top orders, most notably Pakistan’s, when he struck three times in quick succession earlier in the competition.

Pakistan, meanwhile, will be relying heavily on their pace attack to challenge India’s formidable batting line-up. Abdul Subhan has been their standout bowler, well supported by Mohammad Sayyam and Ali Raza, while spinners Niqab Shafiq and Ahmed Hussain add variety. However, batting remains a concern for the Farhan Yousaf-led side, which has lacked consistency and depth under pressure.

With recent history also favouring India including the senior team’s clean sweep of Pakistan in the T20 Asia Cup earlier this year the junior side will be keen to continue the trend. As is customary, the no-handshake policy will be observed.

While Pakistan will be desperate to upset the odds and claim their second U-19 Asia Cup title, India’s form, balance and confidence make them strong favourites to once again finish on top.

The ICC Academy surface is expected to be flat and batting-friendly, with good pace and carry for stroke play, while seamers may get some help early. Weather in Dubai is forecast to be clear and dry, with no rain interruption expected.
