‘Does Trump Know Something About Modi?’ Swamy’s Explosive Question Shakes BJP

Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has sharply escalated his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi , invoking U.S. President Donald Trump ’s claims on Russian oil purchases to raise a provocative and politically destabilising question about Modi’s autonomy, credibility and vulnerability .

In a strongly worded post on X, Swamy urged the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party ’s general body to decide whether Modi should be “retired” and moved to the Marg Darshan Mandal , a forum long associated with the institutional sidelining of senior leaders .

The most striking element of Swamy’s intervention, however, was his explicit insinuation . “ Does Modi have something that Trump knows, to hide from the Indian electorate? ” he asked, warning that Modi’s conduct amounted to “cringing before the US President” and posed a “potential danger for Indian democracy and the BJP.” While distancing himself from Russia’s political system, Swamy framed his critique as opposition to external pressure dictating India’s sovereign choices .

Swamy’s remarks come amid renewed attention to Trump’s repeated public claim that Modi had assured him India would stop buying Russian oil , a claim Trump has openly linked to U.S. trade retaliation . In 2025, Washington imposed two successive 25 per cent tariffs on Indian exports, taking total duties to 50 per cent on several goods , with Trump warning of further escalation if discounted Russian crude imports continued.

The Indian government has formally denied giving any such assurance, maintaining that India’s energy sourcing decisions are driven by price stability, supply security and consumer interest . However, recent developments have lent fresh traction to Trump’s assertions. India’s largest private refiner, Reliance Industries Limited , confirmed this week that it has not received any Russian crude for nearly three weeks and expects none in January , effectively taking its Russian oil intake to zero .

While Reliance has cited compliance with European Union sanctions and commercial considerations, the timing of the halt has coincided with renewed warnings from Washington , reinforcing Trump’s claim that U.S. pressure is reshaping India’s oil trade behaviour . Though the government has not officially linked the two, the development has politically strengthened Trump’s narrative .

Swamy’s attack goes beyond foreign policy. By invoking the Marg Darshan Mandal and appealing directly to the RSS, he has signalled that the issue is not merely diplomatic but institutional , calling for a reassessment of leadership within the BJP. His framing seeks to reject both Russian authoritarianism and what he portrays as submission to American coercion .

The suggestion that Trump may possess damaging or compromising information about Modi follows a familiar Swamy tactic strategic provocation aimed at forcing denials, explanations or internal response . In elevating a dispute over oil imports and tariffs into a question of political leverage and transparency , Swamy has injected a note of unease and suspicion into the BJP’s internal discourse.
