DMK MLA G V Markandeyan Arrested Over Alleged Threatening Remarks Against TN CM Vijay

The political confrontation between the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) escalated on Monday after Vilathikulam MLA G V Markandeyan was arrested over an alleged defamatory and threatening speech targeting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.

According to police, the legislator was arrested from his residence following a complaint filed by a TVK functionary, who alleged that Markandeyan made controversial remarks and threatened the chief minister during a recent public meeting. His supporters staged protests outside the residence, raising slogans against the police action before he was taken into custody.

Police said the case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to criminal intimidation, intentional insult likely to provoke a breach of peace, and other applicable offences. Officials said the investigation is ongoing and further action will depend on the evidence collected.

The arrest comes against the backdrop of an increasingly bitter political rivalry between the TVK government and the DMK, with both parties frequently exchanging sharp accusations. The ruling party has accused the opposition of resorting to inflammatory rhetoric, while the DMK has alleged that the government is using law enforcement agencies to target political opponents.

Reacting to the arrest, TVK leaders defended the police action, saying no one is above the law and that political criticism should not cross into threats or defamatory statements. The DMK, however, described the arrest as politically motivated, accusing the government of suppressing dissent and intimidating opposition leaders.

The incident has renewed debate over the limits of free speech in politics, with legal experts noting that while elected representatives enjoy broad freedom to criticise governments, speeches that allegedly threaten individuals or disturb public order may attract criminal prosecution. The case is expected to remain under close political and legal scrutiny as the investigation progresses.
