DMK-BJP Alliance Speculation ‘Wild Imagination’, Says MMK Chief Jawahirullah
Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) president M H Jawahirullah on Monday dismissed speculation about a possible alliance between the ruling DMK and the BJP, describing it as “wild imagination” and asserting that his party would never associate with anyone joining hands with the saffron party.
Speaking to reporters here, Jawahirullah said the DMK and BJP follow fundamentally opposing ideologies, making suggestions of a political understanding between them unrealistic. He reiterated his party’s commitment to constitutional values and secularism.
“Our stand is unequivocal. We are rooted in an ideology that upholds the Constitution and secularism. The BJP seeks to undermine the constitutional framework. We will never align with anyone who aligns with the BJP,” he said.
Citing DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin’s political record, Jawahirullah recalled his opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and his role in initiating Assembly resolutions against the Centre’s Waqf Amendment Bill. These positions, he said, reflected the DMK’s stated commitment to federalism and secular principles.
On Centre-State relations, the MMK leader urged the Union government to address Tamil Nadu’s pending demands and release its outstanding financial dues without further delay. He argued that the state contributes substantially to the national exchequer through goods and services tax (GST) and direct taxes and should not be denied its legitimate share.
Jawahirullah also renewed the demand for exemption from the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), maintaining that Tamil Nadu had developed a strong healthcare system long before the national medical entrance examination was introduced.
Turning to local issues, he called on the state government to expedite pending flyover projects in Tiruchirappalli to ease traffic congestion. He also urged authorities to fill vacancies in the police intelligence wing.
Additionally, he sought a reconsideration of the timeline for stopping water release from the Mettur Dam, stressing the need to protect farmers in the Cauvery delta districts. His remarks came amid political speculation over possible realignments in Tamil Nadu.
