The opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has announced a major protest in Thanjavur on August 3 against the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, accusing it of failing to protect the interests of farmers in Tamil Nadu.

DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin announced the agitation, alleging that the state government had committed a series of “betrayals” against the farming community. The protest will focus on issues including the Cauvery water dispute, crop loan waiver concerns, and the state government’s approach towards agricultural matters.

In a post on social media platform X, Udhayanidhi accused the government of failing to take a strong stand on the Mekedatu dam issue and alleged that it had remained a “mute spectator” to developments affecting Tamil Nadu’s water interests.

He also criticised the administration for not ensuring the release of water from the Mettur dam on the customary June 12 date and questioned the government’s decision not to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the Cauvery dispute.

The DMK leader further alleged that the government was attempting to gauge public response through unofficial reports about a possible meeting with the Karnataka Chief Minister over the water-sharing issue.

Taking a direct political swipe at the TVK administration, Udhayanidhi described it with hashtags such as #ShootingModel and #CallSheet, referring to what he claimed was a lack of focus on farmers’ concerns.

The protest, to be held under the guidance of DMK president M K Stalin, is expected to see participation from party workers and supporters across the state. The opposition party said the demonstration aims to highlight farmers’ grievances and press the government to address issues related to agriculture and water management.
