Displaced families clash with security forces in Manipur

In Manipur, the long-standing pain of displacement resurfaced on Saturday when hundreds of violence-hit families, desperate to return home, clashed with security forces in Imphal East district. Their attempt to march back to their homes in Gwaltabi was blocked at Yaingangpokpi, leading to rising tension on the ground.No official order was given to release them from the camps.

These families have been living in relief camps since ethnic violence broke out in May 2023. According to them, the government claims that normalcy has been restored yet they are still not allowed to return. Frustrated by the delay, the displaced people began their march, insisting on going back to their villages. As the situation escalated, security forces resorted to firing multiple tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

One protester, S. Ibemcha Devi, questioned, “If peace has returned, why can’t we go home?” Officials said the situation remains tense but is currently under control.

This is not an isolated incident similar confrontations between internally displaced persons (IDPs) and security personnel have occurred repeatedly, particularly since the Sangai Festival began on November 21, highlighting that normalcy is still fragile in Manipur.The Sangai Festival is Manipur’s biggest cultural celebration, showcasing its traditions, art, dance, food, and tourism.Named after the rare Sangai deer, the state animal, it promotes Manipur’s identity and attracts visitors from across India and abroad.
