Diplomacy on a Knife's Edge: Iran's Araghchi Flies to Islamabad as Guns Roar at Sea

The most consequential diplomatic opening since the guns first fired over the Persian Gulf is now taking shape in the Pakistani capital, and the world is watching with bated breath.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi touched down in Islamabad on Friday night, leading a small delegation for bilateral consultations and to discuss the latest situation in the US Iran conflict, in what Pakistani officials are cautiously calling a turning point . One senior Pakistani official has suggested there is now a high likelihood of a breakthrough between the US and Iran, after a week that had seen the two sides move dangerously close to open maritime confrontation rather than any negotiating table.

The timing is critical. US President Donald Trump is sending special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan to meet Araghchi this weekend, with Vice President JD Vance on standby to travel to Islamabad if talks show meaningful progress. Trump has offered no clear timeline , projecting calm detachment despite a crisis that has disrupted global energy markets for weeks.

Behind the diplomatic choreography, tensions at sea continue unabated. The US military boarded another tanker it accused of smuggling Iranian oil, while Iran attacked three commercial ships and seized two of them, calling the American naval presence the main obstacle to peace talks . Italy’s Navy chief has confirmed readiness to deploy up to four vessels as part of a multinational mine clearing mission in the strait. Military planners from more than 30 nations have already met in London to coordinate operations.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth escalated tensions further by calling the Hormuz standoff “much more their fight than ours,” a pointed remark aimed at European allies even as they struggle with rising energy pressure.

India’s position has also tightened. New Delhi has issued an advisory urging all Indian nationals to avoid travel to Iran and asked citizens already there to evacuate immediately through land routes . With thousands of Indians present during the escalation, the advisory carries significant urgency.

Iran continues to insist that the US must lift its blockade before substantive negotiations can resume, a demand Washington has rejected. Araghchi is expected to continue his diplomatic tour with visits to Oman and Moscow, signaling Tehran is pursuing multiple diplomatic channels simultaneously .

The strait may be quieter than a month ago. The diplomacy, however, is anything but.
