Scott Adams, the creator of the globally popular comic strip “Dilbert,” has died at the age of 68 , bringing an end to a career that once defined workplace satire for millions of office-goers around the world. His death was confirmed on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 , after his former wife Shelly Miles announced the news during a livestream posted on Adams’ official social media accounts. In the livestream, she shared that Adams was no longer alive and read out a farewell statement he had written earlier, in which he reflected on his life and said he had “an amazing life” and gave it everything he had.

Adams had revealed in 2025 that he was suffering from advanced prostate cancer that had spread to his bones, and reports said he had recently entered hospice care at his home in Northern California . His illness had visibly affected him in recent months, and he had spoken publicly about his condition as well as the pain and difficulties he faced during treatment. According to Reuters, he had also mentioned pursuing newer treatment options, including the drug Pluvicto , and had appealed publicly for support in accessing care.

Launched in 1989 , “Dilbert” quickly became one of the world’s most widely read comic strips by capturing the frustrations, absurdities, and unspoken truths of modern corporate life. With its mouthless, bespectacled protagonist and sharp humour about bureaucracy and office politics, the strip struck a powerful chord with white-collar workers. At its peak, “Dilbert” appeared in about 2,000 newspapers worldwide, spanning more than 70 countries and translated into 25 languages , making it a truly international cultural product.

The success of “Dilbert” went far beyond newspaper pages, expanding into bestselling books, merchandise, advertising campaigns including those for Office Depot , and even an animated television series in which actor Daniel Stern voiced the main character. Adams earned major recognition during the height of his fame, including the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award in 1997 , one of the most prestigious honours for cartoonists. That same year, “Dilbert” gained further public attention when it became one of the rare fictional characters acknowledged as influential in American culture.

However, Adams’ mainstream standing declined sharply after 2023 , when newspapers across the United States dropped “Dilbert” from syndication following racist remarks made by Adams in a video rant. The backlash was immediate and widespread, marking a dramatic shift in his public image. While he retained a following online, his work largely disappeared from major newspapers, and his legacy became increasingly polarised.

Scott Adams’ death has triggered renewed attention not only to his achievements as a cartoonist but also to the controversies that surrounded his later years. For many readers, “Dilbert” remains one of the most accurate and entertaining reflections of corporate life ever created, while critics argue that Adams’ personal conduct and divisive public statements overshadowed his professional contributions.
