
DigiPin: Your GPS for every 4-metre patch
India Post has officially launched DigiPin, a Digital Postal Index Number system that assigns a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to every 4x4 square meter of land. The initiative aims to enhance location accuracy for navigation, emergency response, and delivery services, particularly in areas with unstructured addresses or limited network connectivity.
The system, developed in collaboration with IIT-Hyderabad and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), has already mapped over 19.25 billion unique addresses across Maharashtra. DigiPin is designed to function both in dense urban areas and remote rural regions, and it works offline, allowing users to save and share codes without internet access, a critical feature for villages and tribal belts with poor connectivity.
A core feature of DigiPin is its open-source framework. The Department of Posts has made the technical documentation and source code publicly available, enabling state governments, private companies, and service providers to integrate the system into their operations. Compared to conventional latitude-longitude coordinates, DigiPin offers a compact, user-friendly format suitable for digital, printed, or handwritten use.
Shobha Madhale, Postmaster General of Nagpur, highlighted the system's importance, noting that it allows precise identification of even the smallest 4x4 meter patch of land, ensuring accurate navigation and service delivery.
To improve accessibility, India Post has introduced two platforms: Know Your DigiPin and Generate Your DigiPin, enabling users to create codes by providing GPS coordinates or selecting locations on an interactive map.
The DigiPin system is expected to have a wide-reaching impact. In emergencies, it can guide ambulances, fire brigades, and disaster relief teams to exact locations, potentially saving lives. For e-commerce and logistics, it addresses issues related to duplicate, incomplete, or unclear addresses, allowing delivery personnel to reach destinations efficiently and reduce operational costs.
Built on Dhruva technology with indigenous ISRO expertise and enhanced by geospatial firm Genesys, DigiPin integrates landmarks and advanced mapping capabilities. With Maharashtra fully mapped, authorities aim for nationwide adoption, positioning DigiPin as a next-generation location identification system, akin to the success of India’s six-digit postal code system.
The government encourages citizens, businesses, and delivery services to adopt DigiPin to improve accuracy, enhance operational efficiency, and strengthen India’s infrastructure for location-based services.
