Did Trump Influence FIFA? Norway Wants Answers After Explosive World Cup Decision

A fresh controversy has engulfed the FIFA World Cup after Norway's football federation announced it is considering filing a formal ethics complaint against FIFA, alleging that external political influence played a role in overturning the mandatory suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun.

The move follows a highly debated decision that allowed Balogun to feature in the United States' crucial World Cup clash against Belgium, despite receiving a red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Under normal FIFA disciplinary rules, the dismissal would have resulted in an automatic one-match suspension.

The controversy intensified after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly revealed that he had spoken with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, describing the referee's decision as a "horrible" call and claiming that FIFA agreed to review the punishment. The suspension was subsequently deferred, allowing Balogun to play.

Although the United States ultimately suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium, the unprecedented decision has triggered widespread debate over the integrity of FIFA's disciplinary process.

Norwegian Football Federation president Lise Klaveness said the federation's board is expected to discuss filing an ethics complaint at its next meeting in early August. She argued that altering an established disciplinary rule under outside pressure risks damaging the credibility of world football.

Klaveness, who also serves on UEFA's executive committee, said football's governing bodies must ensure that decisions remain independent and free from political influence. According to her, bending long-standing rules could set a dangerous precedent for future international tournaments.

The latest development adds to growing scrutiny of the relationship between Trump and Infantino. Norway had earlier joined a complaint filed by London-based NGO FairSquare, accusing the FIFA chief of violating political neutrality. The organisation has also reportedly approached the International Olympic Committee's ethics body over the Balogun episode.

FIFA has not released detailed disciplinary documents explaining why Balogun's suspension was deferred, while its ethics bodies traditionally do not comment publicly on ongoing or potential investigations. The incident has nevertheless reignited concerns about transparency and governance at football's highest level.
