A masked figure photographed among mourners at Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's funeral has triggered fresh speculation in Iran over whether Mojtaba Khamenei , the country's new Supreme Leader , made a hidden appearance at his father's burial. The obscured figure, wearing a black baseball cap and a large mask, stood among a group led by Mostafa Khamenei during the funeral prayer for the late leader in Mashhad, drawing intense scrutiny from Iranian social media users trying to identify him.

Mojtaba was named Supreme Leader after his father was killed in a joint Israel and United States strike that also killed his mother and wife. He has remained in hiding since the war began in late February, communicating with supporters only through written statements attributed to him, and has never shown his face or used his voice in public. Sources in Tehran indicate he suffered severe trauma during the strike, including facial disfigurement and major injuries to his limbs, and remains under recovery.

During six days of ceremonies in Iran and Iraq for his father, mother and wife, Mojtaba did not appear publicly, even as his brothers Mostafa , Masoud and Meysam were seen at events. An earlier masked figure in clerical robes, spotted on a balcony overlooking the crowd at Tehran's Grand Mosalla where the body lay for public viewing, also went viral, though an Iranian cleric named Reza Mousavi Vaez later said on social media that he was the man in that video. Separately, unverified AI generated clips circulated online falsely claiming to show Mojtaba walking in disguise among mourners.

Security concerns are widely cited as the reason for his continued absence. Israel 's Defense Minister Israel Katz said the new leader was marked for death ahead of the funeral, and analysts have warned that any confirmed public appearance could expose him to an assassination attempt given intelligence failures during the recent war. Despite this, mourners at the burial in Mashhad chanted appeals for him by name, and Israel's foreign ministry mocked his absence in a sarcastic social media post.

The uncertainty around Mojtaba's condition has fed doubts within Iran itself. Hardline factions have accused officials negotiating with Washington of defying his orders, with hostile crowds throwing objects at Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and President Masoud Pezeshkian during the funeral march. Iran's government announced a three day memorial service beginning at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, with Mojtaba's office confirming the event but not specifying whether he would personally attend. Separately, Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported he was expected to lead prayers at a condolence ceremony in Qom, though officials have released no recent photographs, video or audio confirming his presence.

State media and pro-government channels in Iran have periodically circulated banners and portraits depicting Mojtaba Khamenei since his appointment, though it remains unclear when any of these images were actually taken, and none have been independently verified as recent or authenticated by his office. Until Tehran provides clear visual or audio confirmation, questions over Mojtaba's health, and over who is actually directing Iran's government, are likely to persist.
