Did Marco Rubio Just Call Trump ‘Stupid’? ‘Every Country Has Stupid People,’ Says Rubio

Marco Rubio standing at a joint press conference alongside External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. It was a pleasant diplomatic occasion, trade, defence, shared values, the usual. Then journalist Sidhant Sibal asked a question that clearly no one in Rubio's team had put on the prep sheet.

The question was about rising racism against Indians in the United States. Rubio's first response was a confident "Who said that?"

Sibal clarified. And then came the answer. "I'll take that very seriously about the comments. I'm sure that there are people who have made comments online and in other places because every country in the world has stupid people. I'm sure there are stupid people here; there are stupid people in the United States who make dumb comments all the time," said Rubio.

And the internet has some answers for those who made those comments - Trump had reshared Truth Social post, in which far-right commentator Michael Savage called India and other countries "hellholes" while criticising birthright citizenship and immigration.

Now, the internet has since split into two very entertaining camps. The first group immediately connected the dots , the post was shared by Trump, Rubio said "stupid people in the US make dumb comments all the time," and well, the joke wrote itself. Half of X spent the afternoon tagging Trump's Truth Social screenshots under Rubio's quote with absolutely zero commentary needed.

The second camp turned their fire on Sibal. A loud section of people online asked why the journalist didn't just name Trump directly instead of referring vaguely to "comments online." Some trolls went further, dusting off the evergreen criticism that Indian journalists simply aren't built for the hard follow-up , too polished, too diplomatic, too accustomed to press conferences where the real question stays safely in their notebook. "We sent a diplomat to interview a diplomat," one person summarised.

To be fair to Sibal, he did post the clip himself on X, captioning it: "US President Donald Trump had endorsed a post terming India 'Hellhole'", so the man clearly knew what he was doing. He just chose to let Rubio walk into it on his own terms.

Which, in hindsight, worked out beautifully. Rubio called someone stupid. The internet decided who. And Indian journalism got dragged in the replies anyway. A perfect Sunday.
