Did Mahesh Babu Miss A Chance To Create History In This Generation?
Mahesh Babu is currently busy shooting for ‘Varanasi’, his upcoming film with director SS Rajamouli. The highly anticipated project is progressing rapidly, with a major portion of the shoot already completed. Meanwhile, a fresh revelation from composer GV Prakash Kumar has brought attention to a missed collaboration involving Mahesh Babu and acclaimed filmmaker Sudha Kongara.
In a recent interaction with SS Music, GV Prakash revealed that Vijay was originally supposed to collaborate with Sudha Kongara on a film before eventually doing ‘Beast’. According to the composer, both Sudha Kongara and filmmaker Vetrimaaran had projects planned with Vijay, but they needed around a year to work on their respective scripts. Vijay’s dates eventually went to ‘Beast’.
The interesting part is that Sudha Kongara did not abandon the script. GV Prakash revealed that she later narrated the same story to Mahesh Babu, which she had originally pitched to Vijay. However, the project also did not materialise with Mahesh Babu. Importantly, GV Prakash did not specify why the Mahesh Babu version fell through.
The revelation is particularly interesting because Mahesh Babu and Sudha Kongara were indeed linked to a potential project around 2021. Reports at the time suggested that the ‘Soorarai Pottru’ director was likely to collaborate with Mahesh after ‘Sarkaru Vaari Paata’, although the project was never officially announced.
Had the film happened, it could have given Mahesh Babu a unique career milestone. He would have headlined a major project directed by a woman filmmaker at a time when collaborations between top male Telugu stars and female directors remain relatively uncommon.
The possibility also carries an interesting connection to Mahesh Babu’s family legacy. His father, legendary actor Krishna, worked with Vijaya Nirmala, who was not only a celebrated actress but also a successful filmmaker. Her association with Krishna remains an important example of a major Telugu star working with a woman director.
That makes the Mahesh Babu and Sudha Kongara collaboration an especially fascinating “what if” in Telugu cinema. It could have connected Mahesh’s contemporary career with an important part of his father’s cinematic legacy while also giving Sudha Kongara an opportunity to direct one of Telugu cinema’s biggest stars.
For now, however, the project remains unrealised. GV Prakash’s latest revelation confirms that the script travelled from Vijay to Mahesh Babu, but neither collaboration ultimately reached the screen.
