Did Jeffrey Epstein fund Anthropic? Newly released emails show that Cami Clark, the wife of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, once sought investment from Epstein for a separate business years before the AI company was founded.

Clark and Michelle Capocefalo co-founded Eddice, a women focused adult entertainment venture that Clark described as a “free luxury porn company.” The business was seeking funding to produce its first films and presented itself as a sex positive alternative to traditional pornography.

Clark was introduced to Epstein in March 2011 through literary agent John Brockman. Emails from the Epstein files show Brockman telling Epstein that he should connect over dinner with Clark and Capocefalo. Clark responded to the introduction and later wrote that meeting Epstein had been “FANTASTIC.”

Days after their meeting, Clark sent Epstein the script and treatment for the first films being developed by her company. One email said, “We thought you and the ladies might enjoy the script/treatment for our first 4 films,” including American Girl in Paris. She added that the material was “a little nsfw.”

The contact continued into 2012. In a March email exchange, Clark asked Epstein about investing in her and a colleague’s businesses. When Epstein appeared not to remember her, Clark reminded him that she ran the “free luxury porn company.” Epstein replied, “Yes, a loud gong.” Clark then discussed the company's plans and asked about investment. Epstein ultimately said, “Can’t do TV sex.” There is no evidence in the released records that he invested in Eddice or provided the funding Clark sought.

Clark's contact with Epstein continued even after the investment discussions. In July 2012, she invited him to a housewarming party. The emails, however, do not establish that Epstein attended or that they met in person again. The correspondence also does not show that Clark participated in Epstein's crimes against women or that she knew about them.

The timing is significant. Epstein had already pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to a prostitution related charge and was a registered sex offender when Clark contacted him. He was later arrested on federal sex trafficking charges in 2019 but died in a New York jail before facing trial.

So, did Epstein fund Anthropic? The available evidence says no. More importantly, Eddice and Anthropic were separate ventures. Eddice did not become Anthropic, and Epstein's emails do not establish any investment in the AI company. Anthropic was founded in 2021, years after Clark's dealings with Epstein.

The Epstein connection has nevertheless drawn attention because of Clark's later role in Amodei's world. Clark married Amodei in 2022, after the couple began dating in 2014. She does not have a formal position at Anthropic, but recent reporting describes her as a sounding board and strategic adviser to her husband and someone who has interacted with investors and influential figures around the company.

Clark also has a connection to former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. She previously dated Schmidt and later helped bring Schmidt into Amodei's orbit. Schmidt became an early Anthropic investor, including in the company's $124 million Series A funding round announced in 2021.

That connection is one reason the old Epstein correspondence is attracting fresh attention. The emails place Clark in contact with Epstein while seeking money for an unrelated venture, while her later career brought her close to the leadership and investor network surrounding Anthropic.
