Under the blazing Paris heat and the spotlight of global attention, Aryna Sabalenka delivered more than just a commanding first-round victory at the 2026 French Open. The world No. 1 combined power tennis with high-fashion glamour, symbolising the evolving identity of modern women’s tennis where dominance, branding, and pressure increasingly go hand in hand.

Sabalenka defeated Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-4, 6-2 on Court Philippe-Chatrier while wearing diamond-and-garnet necklaces worth hundreds of carats. Designed by luxury jeweller Material Good, the accessories were inspired by the iconic red clay of Roland Garros and instantly became one of the biggest talking points of the tournament’s opening week.

The Belarusian later admitted she initially planned to wear three necklaces before deciding that two would be “less crazy.” Sabalenka said feeling confident about her appearance positively impacts her game, explaining that fashion has become part of her competitive mindset at Grand Slam events.

The 28-year-old’s presence in Paris reflects the broader transformation of women’s tennis, where elite players are now expected to balance athletic excellence with celebrity appeal and global marketability. Today’s stars are not only athletes but also fashion icons and social media personalities operating under relentless scrutiny.

Despite her confident appearance, Sabalenka arrived at Roland Garros carrying enormous pressure. Although she owns four Grand Slam titles and has dominated the WTA Tour over the past two seasons, the French Open remains the only major where she is still searching for a title. Last year’s painful final defeat to Coco Gauff and recent struggles on clay courts added to the expectations surrounding her campaign in Paris.

Even so, Sabalenka’s 2026 season has reinforced her status as the leading force in women’s tennis. She captured titles at Brisbane, Indian Wells, and Miami, completing the prestigious Sunshine Double and extending her grip on the world No. 1 ranking.

Elsewhere at Roland Garros, defending champion Gauff advanced comfortably against Taylor Townsend , while Naomi Osaka impressed both on and off the court in a shimmering gold outfit during her victory over Laura Siegemund . On the men’s side, Daniil Medvedev suffered another shock early exit, while top-ranked Jannik Sinner stretched his winning streak to 30 matches.

French teenager Moïse Kouamé also emerged as one of the tournament’s breakout stars after defeating former US Open champion Marin Cilic in his Grand Slam debut.
