Dhruv Jurel’s Unbeaten 115 Puts India In Command Against Sri Lanka

Dhruv Jurel produced a superb unbeaten 115 as India tightened their grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka, declaring their first innings at 503 for nine before striking twice in a rain-affected final session at the Sinhalese Sports Club on Monday.

India resumed on 300 for five, with Jurel on seven and debutant Saransh Jain on four. Jain fell early, bringing Rishabh Pant back to the crease after he had retired hurt on the opening day following a blow to his wrist.

Pant responded with a determined 63, joining Jurel in a crucial 112-run seventh-wicket partnership that took India to 419 for six at lunch. Pant faced a barrage of short deliveries from Sri Lanka's pacers and reached his half-century from 81 balls, including a powerful six off Prabath Jayasuriya.

Jurel, meanwhile, played the perfect supporting role before taking charge after Pant's dismissal with the first ball after lunch. The 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter showed excellent judgement against both pace and spin, reaching his half-century from 97 balls.

Jurel then found another reliable partner in Manav Suthar, with the pair adding 54 for the eighth wicket. Suthar made 18 before being caught behind, while Mohammed Siraj subsequently provided valuable support as Jurel moved towards his century.

The rain intervened with India on 475 for eight, leaving Jurel stranded on 95. After a delay of more than two hours, he completed his second Test century with a single to mid-off, having spent 22 deliveries on 99. He eventually finished on 115 from 177 balls, with nine fours and two sixes.

Jurel's century was also significant statistically. He became only the second Indian to score a Test hundred at No. 7 or lower in Sri Lanka, after Hardik Pandya achieved the feat in 2017.

The innings was built on the foundation laid by Devdutt Padikkal, who had scored 117 on the opening day for his second successive Test century. Shubman Gill and Pant also contributed half-centuries, while Ravindra Jadeja and Suthar provided useful lower-order runs.

India crossed 500 before declaring after 138 overs, with Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando the most successful bowler at 4/106 and Jayasuriya taking 2/132.

India's bowlers then made an immediate impact. Prasidh Krishna dismissed Lahiru Udara for one, with Yashasvi Jaiswal taking a spectacular diving catch at third slip, before Manav Suthar trapped nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya lbw for two.

Sri Lanka reached 8 for two from just three overs before fading light ended play. Kamil Mishara was unbeaten on five, leaving the hosts 495 runs behind with eight first-innings wickets remaining.

India had won the opening Test in Galle by 165 runs and can now push for a series victory in the two-match World Test Championship contest. The Colombo Test is scheduled to run until August 27, with both sides seeking valuable WTC points.
