Chennai Super Kings may begin their IPL 2026 campaign without their iconic figure MS Dhoni , after the franchise confirmed that the veteran wicketkeeper batter is recovering from a calf strain and is expected to miss the first two weeks of the tournament .

In a statement released on Saturday, the franchise said Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation and will remain under medical supervision as he works toward regaining full fitness. The development comes just days before CSK begin their campaign in the new season.

The 44 year old former India captain has continued to play in the IPL despite retiring from international cricket in 2020 . Over the years, Dhoni has remained the heart of the Chennai franchise, guiding the team through several successful campaigns since the inaugural IPL season in 2008 . Although Ruturaj Gaikwad now leads the side as captain, Dhoni continues to play a crucial leadership and mentoring role within the squad.

In recent seasons, managing fitness has been a challenge for the veteran. Dhoni has dealt with recurring knee issues and even underwent knee surgery in 2023 . His role with the bat has also evolved, often batting lower down the order to provide late acceleration in the final overs.

In Dhoni’s absence, CSK are likely to turn to Sanju Samson for wicketkeeping duties , while Sarfaraz Khan could come into the playing XI as a middle order batting option if the team looks to strengthen its lineup.

CSK open their IPL 2026 campaign against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30 , and the team will hope their legendary finisher returns soon to guide them as the tournament progresses.
