Devine to lead NZ; Four debutantes picked

Veteran all-rounder Sophie Devine will lead New Zealand in the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup, marking her fifth appearance in the tournament. The 15-member squad, announced Wednesday, also features four cricketers making their maiden ICC World Cup appearance.

Alongside Devine, the squad boasts experienced campaigners Suzie Bates and pacer Lea Tahuhu, appearing in their fifth and fourth World Cups respectively. Maddy Green and Melie Kerr bring further experience, having played in three previous editions.

New Zealand coach Ben Sawyer expressed confidence in the squad’s balance and readiness for the challenges ahead in the eight-team tournament, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka from September 30. “I’m really pleased with the mix of experience and fresh talent. The four players making their World Cup debut have earned this opportunity, and I’m excited to see the impact they can make,” Sawyer said.

Among the newcomers is 22-year-old all-rounder Flora Devonshire, who impressed at the domestic level to earn her ODI call-up. Sawyer acknowledged the tough decisions in leaving out regular players such as Fran Jonas, Lauren Down, Molly Penfold, and Hannah Rowe. “Choosing Flora over Fran was a difficult call. Fran is a quality player, and at 21, her best years are ahead,” he added.

The coach emphasized that the team is well-prepared, highlighting focused training since April to enhance physical and technical skills. “We aim to build on our success from the Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE last year,” he said.

The White Ferns open their World Cup campaign against Australia in Indore on October 1.
