Despite Diplomatic push, Thailand-Cambodia border violence escalates

Fresh fighting along the disputed border between Thailand and Cambodia has continued despite renewed diplomatic efforts and public claims of a ceasefire, exposing deep divisions between official statements and ground realities in one of Southeast Asia’s longest-running territorial conflicts.

The latest escalation has drawn international attention after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that leaders of both countries had agreed to halt hostilities following discussions facilitated by Malaysia. Trump said the agreement involved an immediate cessation of military action and a return to previously negotiated peace arrangements, describing the move as a diplomatic breakthrough aimed at restoring stability in the region.

However, the claim was swiftly contradicted by authorities in Bangkok. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said no formal ceasefire was in place and that Thai forces would continue operations until what he described as threats to Thailand’s sovereignty and civilian safety were fully addressed. He maintained that any pause in fighting would require reciprocal action from Cambodia, including troop withdrawals and guarantees against further attacks.

On the Cambodian side, Prime Minister Hun Manet reiterated his government’s support for diplomatic solutions and regional mediation, while accusing Thailand of continuing military strikes even after ceasefire discussions were announced. Phnom Penh has backed proposals for international or ASEAN-led monitoring mechanisms but has stressed that peace efforts must be respected by both sides simultaneously.

Malaysia has played a central role in mediation efforts. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim , whose country currently holds a leadership role within ASEAN, has repeatedly called for restraint and dialogue. Anwar has urged both nations to return to the framework of an earlier peace understanding reached this year and has offered Malaysia’s assistance in deploying observers to help stabilize the border if an agreement is reached.

The current violence has placed severe strain on a fragile peace process that was initiated earlier this year but has repeatedly collapsed amid accusations of violations from both sides. Tensions reignited after Thailand accused Cambodia of actions that endangered Thai troops, an allegation Cambodia has denied. Since then, clashes involving artillery fire, rockets, and air operations have been reported across multiple contested areas.

The humanitarian impact has been significant. Thousands of civilians have fled border villages, with temporary shelters set up in both countries. Infrastructure damage and civilian casualties have further raised concerns among regional and international observers, who warn that prolonged fighting could destabilize the broader region.

As of Saturday, there was no confirmation of a verifiable ceasefire on the ground. While diplomatic channels remain open, the sharply differing positions taken by Washington, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and Kuala Lumpur underline the uncertainty surrounding peace efforts. Analysts say that without clear enforcement mechanisms and mutual trust, the conflict risks further escalation despite repeated calls for calm.
