Desert challenge! Sanjay Takale prepares for Dakar Rally glory

Rally driver Sanjay Takale , the only Indian to compete in the four-wheeler category of the prestigious Dakar Rally , is set to make his second consecutive appearance at the world’s toughest motorsport event, which begins in Saudi Arabia on January 3 . Rally racing is an off-road motorsport where drivers navigate challenging terrains against the clock, testing both speed and endurance.

Takale, 57, made his Dakar debut earlier this year and finished an impressive 18th overall while placing 10th in his class in the Dakar Classic category, a regularity based event designed for vintage rally vehicles. His performance marked a significant milestone in a career that has already spanned more than three decades in motorsport.

For the upcoming edition, Takale will represent Team Aerpace Racers , partnering once again with French navigator Maxime Raud . The team will receive technical and logistical backing from Compagnie Saharienne , ensuring strong support through the grueling stages of the rally.

A former Asia Pacific Production Cup champion, Takale has also competed in select World Rally Championship events, making him one of India’s most experienced international rally drivers. Reflecting on his return to Dakar, he said his aim is to finish the event once again while improving on last year’s result through a consistent and disciplined approach.

Often described as the ultimate test of endurance and spirit, the Dakar Rally runs across challenging terrain including sand dunes, rocky paths and desert tracks. The 2025 edition will conclude on January 17.
