Deputy CM to Head Cabinet Sub-Committee on Musi River Revival

In a decisive push to accelerate one of Telangana’s most ambitious urban transformation initiatives, the state government has constituted a high-level Cabinet sub-committee to oversee the Musi River rejuvenation project . The move is aimed at ensuring faster execution, stronger coordination across departments, and close monitoring of on-ground progress.

Formed under the direction of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy , the committee will be chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka . IT and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu and Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar have been inducted as members, while the Musi River Development Corporation Limited (MRDCL) Managing Director will serve as the convener.

The Musi River project , spanning nearly a 55-kilometre river corridor , aims to transform a heavily polluted urban river into a sustainable and vibrant riverfront. Over time, the river has suffered severe degradation due to untreated sewage, industrial waste, and encroachments, making ecological restoration both urgent and essential.

The sub-committee will focus on four core priorities: restoring the river’s ecosystem, strengthening flood mitigation systems, ensuring effective sewage treatment plants (STPs) to prevent wastewater inflow, and promoting riverfront development with tourism and infrastructure. These measures are designed to improve environmental health while enhancing urban livability.

Financially, Phase I of the project is estimated at around ₹6,500–₹7,000 crore , with funding options being explored through Asian Development Bank support and other financing models. The plan includes landscaped riverbanks, public spaces, and improved connectivity.

The committee will oversee inter-departmental coordination , project planning, and implementation, ensuring timely progress. However, concerns remain over displacement of residents , rising costs, and the need to prioritise sustainability over commercialisation.

If executed effectively, the project could transform Hyderabad into a city with a world-class riverfront , balancing development with environmental protection.
