Democracy Voided: EC Scraps Entire Falta Poll, Orders Fresh Vote on May 21 in West Bengal
In one of the most dramatic electoral interventions in West Bengal's recent history, the Election Commission of India on Saturday declared the April 29 poll in the Falta assembly constituency entirely void and ordered a fresh election across all 285 booths on May 21 , a decision that has sent shockwaves through the state's political establishment just days before the rest of Bengal counts its votes on May 4.
The Commission cited "severe electoral offences and subversion of the democratic process" as grounds for annulling the poll. Investigators tracked down missing CCTV footage covering long gap hours and uncovered multiple instances of large groups of companions casting votes together, a pattern that pointed to systematic, coordinated manipulation rather than isolated incidents. Observer reports flagged voter intimidation, unauthorised presence inside booths, and possible EVM tampering , including allegations that tape had been placed over a BJP candidate's name and symbol on voting machines at multiple centres.
The ground situation in Falta had been deteriorating well before the Commission's ruling. Locals staged street protests alleging threats by TMC cadres, with residents claiming that a panchayat leader had threatened to burn their houses and cause bloodshed if the ruling party did not retain power. CRPF and Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed after tensions flared, and an armoured vehicle was moved in as a precautionary measure. West Bengal Police arrested three persons, Atibur Rahman, Habib Sheikh, and Habib Molla , identified as close aides of TMC candidate Jahangir Khan , and lodged an FIR against panchayat pradhan Israfil Chakdar and his associate Sujauddin Sheikh , both of whom remain absconding.
UP-cadre IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma , serving as police observer, had earlier warned Khan of strict action and flagged that he had been given far more security personnel than permitted under his protocol, with 14 state police officers deployed when only 10 were authorised.
Fresh polling will now be held on May 21 from 7 am to 6 pm under stringent security arrangements, with counting scheduled on May 24 . The EC has mandated complete videography, micro-observers, webcasting, and adequate central forces at every booth.
Falta sits within the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency , the fiefdom of TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee , who responded defiantly, challenging the "entire Union of India" to contest in Falta and daring his opponents to send their strongest. BJP's Sukanta Majumdar , meanwhile, called the repoll order a victory for the women of Falta. With the seat now a symbol of the larger battle over Bengal's democratic health, all eyes will be on May 21 and whether the Commission's unprecedented intervention can deliver the free and fair vote that April 29 so visibly failed to be.
