The upcoming delimitation exercise will be conducted in a fair and scientific manner, without affecting any state’s share in Parliament, BJP leader PVN Madhav said. He underlined that the initiative is intended to strengthen representation by increasing the number of elected members.

Dismissing apprehensions voiced by opposition parties, especially those from southern states, Madhav said such concerns are unfounded. He indicated that Assembly and Lok Sabha seats could see an increase of nearly 50 percent , while maintaining the existing proportional representation of states. Referring to Andhra Pradesh, he noted that its current share in Parliament would remain unchanged. He also cited Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who had clarified that the process would follow a pro-rata formula.

Calling delimitation a purely administrative exercise, Madhav criticised the Indian National Congress and other opposition groups for spreading unnecessary concerns among the public.

In Parliament, the Centre introduced key bills in the Lok Sabha, including the Delimitation Bill 2026 and the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill 2026 . The proposals received initial approval after a division vote overseen by Speaker Om Birla, with 251 members voting in favour and 185 against.

The issue of women’s reservation has also gained prominence during the ongoing special session. The government is pushing to ensure 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha by the 2029 elections, based on the 2011 Census, a move BJP leaders say will significantly boost women’s political participation.
