NDA’s 102-Seat Assam Sweep Sparks Debate, Critics Cite Delimitation Impact

A day after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a commanding 102 of 126 seats in the Assam Assembly, the scale of the victory has triggered a political debate, with critics pointing to the 2023 delimitation exercise as a decisive factor behind the outcome.

The redrawing of constituencies, carried out ahead of the polls, reshaped electoral boundaries without altering the total number of seats , but significantly changed their demographic composition. Several Muslim-majority constituencies were fragmented or merged with areas dominated by indigenous communities, reducing the influence of what had been a consolidated minority vote in nearly 35 seats to fewer than 25 .

The exercise also expanded reserved constituencies , with Scheduled Tribe seats rising from 16 to 19 and Scheduled Caste seats from eight to nine . Key constituencies such as Barpeta and Goalpara (West) , which previously had strong support for the opposition, were reclassified, and subsequently won by the NDA.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the principal beneficiary, winning 82 seats , while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) , added 10 seats each. In contrast, the Indian National Congress was limited to 19 seats, while the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) saw its tally drop sharply from 16 in the previous election to just two.

Critics argue that the realignment diluted established vote bases , particularly in minority-dominated regions, making it harder for opposition parties to retain their earlier strongholds. Most opposition victories were confined to constituencies that remained largely unaffected by the new boundaries.

The impact of delimitation was also visible in the recent Lok Sabha elections , the first conducted under the revised map, where the NDA similarly strengthened its position across reconfigured constituencies.

While the ruling alliance has defended the exercise as a constitutional and data-driven process based on the 2011 Census , opposition leaders maintain that its political consequences are now evident, making delimitation a central issue in Assam’s evolving electoral landscape.
