Delhi Rainfall Surpasses August Normal as Capital Logs 230.1 mm in Eight Days

The national capital has already surpassed its average monthly rainfall for August within the first eight days of the month, with the Safdarjung Observatory recording 230.1 mm of rain so far, according to weather data.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Delhi's mean total rainfall for August, based on the 1991-2020 climatological period, is 226.8 mm. Safdarjung had recorded 225.7 mm up to 8.30 am on Saturday, while another 4.4 mm was recorded between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, taking the cumulative rainfall to 230.1 mm.

Delhi also experienced its wettest August day in two years on Saturday, with Safdarjung receiving 98.7 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am. The last higher rainfall recorded on an August day was 107.6 mm on August 1, 2024.

The capital has been witnessing rainfall for the fourth consecutive day, with several weather stations recording substantial precipitation. Palam received 104.6 mm, Ayanagar 115 mm, Ridge 89.8 mm and Lodi Road 86.8 mm during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am.

Rain continued through the day, with Ayanagar recording the highest rainfall of 16 mm between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. Ridge recorded 9.4 mm, Lodi Road 6.5 mm, while Safdarjung and Palam received 4.4 mm each.

The rainfall has pushed Delhi's August total beyond its monthly climatological average unusually early in the month. With more rain forecast, the city's cumulative rainfall could rise further in the coming days.

The IMD has forecast light to very light rain at some places in Delhi over the next two days, indicating that wet conditions are likely to persist in parts of the capital.
