Delhi Police Tightens New Year’s Eve Vigil Against Drunk Driving, Bike Stunts

The Delhi Police on Wednesday rolled out a heightened enforcement drive across the national capital to curb drunk driving , dangerous motorcycle stunts and other traffic violations on New Year’s Eve , citing a history of fatal accidents and law-and-order incidents during late-night celebrations in previous years.

Officials said the special drive aims to prevent mishaps and ensure public safety at a time when alcohol consumption , late-night movement and traffic congestion traditionally spike. Strict action will be taken against motorists found driving under the influence , overspeeding , performing stunts or violating traffic rules , they said.

According to senior police officers, additional personnel have been deployed across party hotspots, busy markets, major intersections, arterial roads and accident-prone stretches. Multiple integrated checkpoints have been set up at strategic locations, with intensified use of breath analysers and modern enforcement equipment to detect violations.

Special teams have been tasked with cracking down on bikers performing stunts, rash driving and groups attempting to create public nuisance on roads. Continuous night patrolling has also been intensified across the city.

Police officials said the measures follow lessons from previous New Year’s Eve incidents, when drunk driving, overspeeding and reckless riding led to fatal crashes, serious injuries and damage to public property. A senior officer said the focus is on prevention as much as enforcement, with high police visibility intended to deter violations and reassure the public.

Senior officers are personally supervising the arrangements, while coordination has been strengthened between the Traffic Police, district police units and PCR teams to ensure a quick response to emergencies. Traffic movement will be monitored round-the-clock through CCTV cameras and other surveillance systems from police control rooms.

Emergency response mechanisms have also been reinforced to handle accidents, medical emergencies or law-and-order situations during late-night celebrations, officials said, urging citizens to celebrate responsibly and avoid risky behaviour.
