Delhi Metro Achieves 99.95% Punctuality As Ridership Crosses 64 Lakh Daily

Delhi Metro trains have maintained an impressive 99.95 per cent punctuality rate in 2026, underscoring the network’s operational reliability even as it has expanded rapidly across the National Capital Region, according to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The corporation said daily ridership has surged from about 82,000 passenger journeys in the Metro’s first year to an average of 64.06 lakh journeys currently. The network recorded its highest single-day ridership of more than 81 lakh journeys on August 8, 2025.

DMRC said its punctuality benchmark is particularly stringent: a train is classified as delayed if it reaches its destination more than 59 seconds behind schedule. Punctuality improved from 98.27 per cent in 2003 to 99.64 per cent in 2005 and has stayed close to the 99.9 per cent level in subsequent years.

Operational reliability has also strengthened. The Metro’s Mean Distance Between Failures (MDBF), a measure of the distance travelled before a service-affecting failure, currently stands at 2.72 million car-kilometres.

International benchmarking by the Community of Metros (COMET), a consortium of 45 metro systems, has placed Delhi Metro among the world’s top five systems for reliability using a two-minute delay criterion.

The system has also cut train headways sharply on some of its busiest corridors, from seven minutes in its early years to just 2 minutes and 18 seconds. About 29 per cent of the network is now operated under Unattended Train Operation (UTO).

The Pink Line (Line 7) spans 71.55 km with 45 stations and uses driverless technology, providing interchanges with most other Metro lines and alternative routes across the network.

Delhi Metro began operations on December 25, 2002, with an 8.4-km Shahdara-Tis Hazari corridor and six stations. It has since grown to 416.5 km, 303 stations, 12 lines and 31 interchange stations, linking Delhi with the wider NCR. The figures highlight how technology, tighter scheduling and network upgrades have helped system handle demand without compromising consistency across routes in Delhi and the NCR.
