Delhi Court Convicts Congress Leader Alka Lamba in 2024 Jantar Mantar Police Assault
A Delhi court on Monday convicted Congress leader Alka Lamba in a case linked to alleged assault on police personnel during a protest held at Jantar Mantar in 2024.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ashwani Panwar pronounced the conviction and scheduled June 5 for hearing arguments on sentencing. A detailed judgment order is still awaited.
The case pertains to a protest organised on July 29, 2024 at Jantar Mantar in support of women’s reservation , during which the prosecution alleged that Lamba and others obstructed police personnel and blocked a public road while demonstrating.
According to the prosecution, the All India Mahila Congress president was involved in actions that amounted to interference with official duty and disruption of public movement. Police had claimed that the protest escalated into a situation where officers were allegedly prevented from carrying out lawful directions at the site.
In December last year, a magisterial court had directed that charges be framed against Lamba for multiple offences, including assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty , obstruction of a public servant , disobedience to lawful orders issued by a public authority , and obstruction or danger in a public way .
Her subsequent revision plea challenging the framing of charges was dismissed on February 6 , allowing the trial to proceed.
Lamba, a senior political figure and president of the All India Mahila Congress, has not yet issued an immediate detailed public response on Monday’s conviction.
The matter now moves to the sentencing stage, with the court set to hear arguments on punishment on June 5 .
