The price of compressed natural gas (CNG) in the national capital was raised by Rs 2 per kg on Tuesday, marking the fourth increase in less than two weeks and intensifying concerns over the rising cost of daily transport in the city.

With the latest revision by Indraprastha Gas Limited, CNG in Delhi will now cost Rs 83.09 per kg . Since May 15, prices have cumulatively increased by Rs 4 per kg , affecting lakhs of auto-rickshaw drivers, cab operators, delivery workers and middle-class commuters who rely on CNG as a cheaper alternative to petrol and diesel.

The repeated hikes are expected to push up fares for public and private transport services across the capital. Auto and taxi unions have already indicated that sustained increases in fuel prices could force them to demand fare revisions, adding to the burden on consumers already grappling with inflation and high living costs.

The development has also reignited debate over the widening gap between India’s green energy ambitions and the affordability of cleaner fuels. CNG has long been promoted as an environmentally friendly transition fuel aimed at reducing vehicular pollution in Delhi, one of the world’s most polluted capitals. However, frequent price hikes have weakened its cost advantage over conventional fuels, raising questions about whether cleaner mobility is becoming financially inaccessible for ordinary users.

Experts say that unless cleaner fuels remain affordable, public willingness to shift toward low-emission transport could decline, undermining broader climate and urban pollution goals. The latest increase comes at a time when governments continue to advocate greener transportation while consumers face steadily rising energy expenses.
