Delhi Airport Weather Disruption: 15 Flights Diverted, 280+ Delayed

At least 15 flights were diverted from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Monday as heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds disrupted flight operations, according to an airport official.

Of the diverted flights, 12 were sent to Jaipur, while two were diverted to Chandigarh and one to Lucknow. The adverse weather also led to widespread delays and cancellations at one of the country’s busiest airports.

Delhi witnessed spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 30–40 kmph in several parts of the national capital. The weather conditions affected both arriving and departing flights, with airlines cautioning passengers about possible disruptions.

According to data from flight-tracking website Flightradar24, more than 280 flights were delayed at the airport, while over 20 services were cancelled.

IndiGo, in a post on X, said adverse weather in the national capital had affected flight schedules and that the airline was closely monitoring the situation. The carrier advised passengers to check their flight status before travelling to the airport.

Air India also issued a weather advisory on X, warning that adverse weather conditions could impact flight operations to and from Delhi during the day.

The disruptions came as weather conditions deteriorated across parts of the capital, with thunderstorms and gusty winds posing challenges for aviation operations. Such conditions can affect aircraft movement, visibility and airport ground operations, potentially causing cascading delays across multiple routes.

Delhi airport, officially known as IGIA, is among India’s busiest aviation hubs and handles more than 1,300 flight movements every day. Even short-term weather disruptions can therefore affect thousands of passengers and cause delays across the wider domestic and international network.

Airlines and airport authorities are expected to continue monitoring the weather as operations gradually stabilise. Passengers travelling through Delhi were advised to remain alert to flight-status updates and allow additional time for airport procedures amid the weather-related disruptions.
