Defence stocks surge as US raids Venezuela, Nifty Defence Index hits one-month high
Indian defence stocks surged sharply on Monday following heightened geopolitical tensions after the United States carried out a military operation in Venezuela , abducting President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Investor sentiment was lifted amid expectations of sustained global defence demand, pushing key shares and indices higher.
The Nifty India Defence index rose nearly 2 percent to 7,931.35 , marking its highest level in over a month. Shares of leading defence companies such as Bharat Electronics (BEL), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and Paras Defence and Space Technologies recorded significant gains. BEL emerged as one of the top gainers on both the Sensex and Nifty 50 , rising nearly 3 percent , while Paras Defence and HAL climbed over 3 percent each.
Other defence companies, including BEML , Astra Microwave Products , Bharat Dynamics (BDL), Data Patterns India , and Solar Industries , rose more than 2 percent . Shipbuilding stocks such as Cochin Shipyard and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) gained around 2 percent , and Zen Technologies and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders added over 1 percent . Mtar Technologies was among the biggest movers, surging over 5 percent to trade at Rs 2,497 per share.
Analysts noted that the rise in defence stocks was driven by expectations of prolonged geopolitical tensions , potential arms deals, and increased demand for military equipment globally. “The Venezuela situation has created a sense of urgency in the defence sector, as investors anticipate higher government and international spending on defence,” said a market strategist.
The US operation, dubbed 'Absolute Resolve' , involved airstrikes across Venezuela and the capture of the President and First Lady. US President Donald Trump stated, “We are going to run the country until a safe and judicious transition can take place,” framing it as a US-led interim takeover. He added that large quantities of Venezuelan oil would now be sold internationally.
If the US maintains control over Venezuela for an extended period, analysts say it could have long-term implications for global energy and defence markets. Increased tensions in the region may lead to sustained demand for defence equipment, potentially benefiting Indian defence companies. It could also stabilize oil supplies to global markets, indirectly impacting sectors linked to energy security.
Market watchers will closely track the situation, as developments in Venezuela could continue to influence investor sentiment and trading in defence stocks in the coming weeks.
