India has taken another significant step towards strengthening its indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities, with the Ministry of Defence signing a ₹425 crore contract with Bharat Forge Limited for the supply of 12 indigenous 1.25 MW Marine Gas Turbine Generators (MGTGs) for the Indian Navy .

The contract has been awarded under the government's Buy (Indian) category, which requires a minimum of 60 per cent indigenous content . The advanced generators will be installed on naval warships and will provide power to critical onboard systems, including combat systems, sensors, communication networks and weapons platforms .

The agreement also includes comprehensive lifecycle support , ensuring long term maintenance, repairs and operational readiness of the equipment throughout its service life. Defence officials believe the project will enhance the Navy's operational efficiency while strengthening India's domestic defence industrial base.

The deal is particularly important because marine gas turbine generator technology and maintenance support have traditionally relied on foreign suppliers, especially Russia and Ukraine . By developing indigenous manufacturing and repair capabilities, India aims to reduce import dependence and improve strategic autonomy in a critical area of naval operations.

For Bharat Forge , one of India's leading private-sector defence manufacturers, the contract marks a major expansion into the naval systems segment. The company has already established itself in areas such as artillery systems and defence platforms, and this project further broadens its role in the country's military modernisation efforts.

The contract aligns with the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, which seeks to increase domestic defence production, encourage technological innovation and create a stronger self reliant ecosystem for military equipment manufacturing.

As the Indian Navy continues to modernise and expand its fleet, the induction of these homegrown power generation systems is expected to enhance operational readiness while supporting India's broader goal of achieving greater self sufficiency in defence technology.
