India’s women recurve archery team scripted a stunning comeback to defeat hosts China in a tense shoot-off and win the Archery World Cup Stage 2 gold medal in Shanghai on Sunday.

The Indian trio of Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat and teenage archer Kumkum Mohod held their nerve under immense pressure to secure a thrilling 5-4 victory after the match ended level at 4-4 in regulation sets.

The triumph became even more special as India had earlier stunned 10 time Olympic champions South Korea in the semifinals on the way to the title. It marked India’s first women’s recurve World Cup gold since 2021 and ended a three year wait for a podium finish in the event.

India started confidently, taking the opening set 54-53 with Deepika delivering crucial 10s. However, China fought back strongly and moved into a 4-2 lead after the third set, putting the visitors under serious pressure.

The turning point came in the fourth set when China failed to convert a winning opportunity in front of the home crowd, allowing India to force a dramatic shoot-off.

In the decider, Ankita opened with a 9 before Kumkum produced a superb 10. With only an 8 needed to win, Deepika calmly delivered the final arrow , sealing a memorable victory for India.

The gold once again highlighted Deepika’s experience and leadership , especially as the team competed without a full time national coach. The four time Olympian now has seven World Cup team gold medals to her name since 2010.
