Deepak Punia’s Bold Jump to 97kg Steals Spotlight as India Finalises Asian Games Wrestling Squad
A forced but fortunate shift in weight category turned into a defining moment for India’s wrestling contingent as Deepak Punia powered into the 97kg division squad for the Asian Games, while Olympic bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat and consistent performer Sujeet Kalkal retained their places during the national selection trials on Sunday.
What began as an unexpected adjustment due to injury became a career-changing opportunity for Deepak Punia , who had spent most of his international journey in lower weight categories. Entering the 97kg bracket almost out of necessity rather than planning, he looked composed against physically bigger opponents and finished his campaign in style by defeating Jointy Kumar in the final to seal his spot.
Deepak’s route to the top was convincing throughout the day. He opened with dominant wins over Sahil Jaglan and Deepak Chahal before producing his most significant performance in the semifinal, where he outclassed U23 Asian champion Vicky 7-3. The victory confirmed that his transition was not just a stopgap but a genuine competitive fit.
Explaining his move, Deepak Punia said an injury just days before the trials forced him to stop cutting weight. With his body naturally settling around the higher range, he decided to compete rather than withdraw, a call that ultimately worked in his favour.
There were no surprises in the lighter categories. Aman Sehrawat once again demonstrated his dominance in the 57kg division , dismantling Rahul 11-1 by technical superiority in the final. Sujeet Kalkal continued his steady rise in the 65kg category , edging Vishal Kaliramana 2-0 in a tightly contested final.
The trials also saw competitive battles across divisions, including a notable upset in the 74kg category , while established names largely held their ground to complete the squad.
India’s men’s freestyle team for the Asian Games now features Aman Sehrawat in 57kg, Sujeet Kalkal in 65kg, Sagar Jaglan in 74kg, Mukul Dahiya in 86kg, Deepak Punia in 97kg, and Rajat Rahul in 125kg.
In Greco Roman wrestling, Deepak Punia also impressed with a 10-6 win in the 67kg final, underlining his strong form across styles, while other categories saw expected winners secure their places.
The trials concluded with India banking on a blend of proven performers and emerging momentum as the Asian Games approach.
