Debut Dream! Connolly Powers PBKS to Thrilling Win Over GT
Cooper Connolly made a memorable debut in the Indian Premier League, scoring a match-winning unbeaten 72 to guide Punjab Kings (PBKS) to a thrilling three-wicket win over Gujarat Titans (GT) here on Tuesday.
After opting to field, PBKS relied on a disciplined bowling effort to restrict GT to 162 for six in their 20 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal (2/28) used his variations cleverly in the middle overs to check the scoring, while Vijaykumar Vyshak (3/34) struck at crucial intervals. Marco Jansen also chipped in with a tidy spell.
GT got off to a brisk start, with skipper Shubman Gill (39 off 27) finding the gaps with ease. However, PBKS pulled things back after the powerplay. Jos Buttler (38) and Glenn Phillips (25) added useful runs, but regular wickets prevented the visitors from building momentum, resulting in a below-par total.
In reply, PBKS had an early setback, but Connolly and Prabhsimran Singh (37 off 24) steadied the innings with a crucial 76-run stand for the second wicket. The duo played positively, keeping the required rate under control with timely boundaries.
GT fought back through Prasidh Krishna (3/29), who removed key batters in quick succession, while Rashid Khan and Washington Sundar also chipped in with a wicket each to bring the contest alive.
Despite the pressure, Connolly held his nerve, finishing with five sixes and five fours to anchor the chase as PBKS reached 165 for seven in 19.1 overs. His composure ensured the hosts crossed the line with five balls to spare.
Earlier, GT had raced to a quick start before Chahal’s spell turned the tide. His dismissal of Gill proved pivotal in breaking the rhythm of the innings.
With this win, PBKS make a strong start to their campaign , showcasing both bowling discipline and batting depth.
