Death Toll in Andhra Cracker Unit Blast Rises to 28 Investigation Underway

The death toll in the explosion at a licensed cracker manufacturing unit in Vetlapalem village, Samarlakota mandal, Kakinada district , has risen to 28 , officials confirmed on Thursday. The tragedy occurred on February 28 , triggering widespread concern over safety standards in firecracker manufacturing units.

Initially, 20 people were killed , including nine women , in the powerful blast. Nine others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. Authorities stated that two more injured persons succumbed to their injuries on Thursday , taking the total fatalities to 28. Eight victims had earlier died during treatment after the incident.

Kakinada District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) J Narasimha Nayak informed PTI that the additional deaths were reported due to severe burn injuries and complications despite medical efforts. The injured continue to receive critical care under close medical supervision .

The blast occurred at a licensed fireworks manufacturing unit , raising questions about compliance with safety regulations and operational standards . Officials have initiated a detailed investigation into the cause of the explosion and are reviewing whether safety protocols were followed.

Local authorities are also assessing the impact on nearby residents and infrastructure. Further details regarding compensation, relief measures, and regulatory action are expected as the investigation progresses.
